Welcome to the
SRC  Secular Recovery Community
Support Group Meeting Directory

INSTRUCTIONS

Greetings!

Welcome to the SRC Secular Support Group Meeting Directory.

Everyone is welcome to immediately search the directory to locate a secular support group meeting (or other resource) closest to them. Click search.  You are also invited to add your meeting(s) or organization to the directory (if your resource is aligned with the SRC principles of Secularity, Sobriety, and Self-help).  However, to add a record (or edit or delete records you have previously added) you need to register.  It's quick, painless and free.  If you would like to register, please read these instructions, and then click on Join SRC.  If you are already a member and wish to add or edit a record, please  login.

BACKGROUND  :  There is no rocket science here, but it will help if you understand what the directory is about and who it is for, and what it attempts to accomplish before you jump in and add records. First of all, most importantly, a database is only as good as it’s data.  A database that is not well-populated and is  full of outdated or inaccurate or erroneous information is no good to anyone and makes the directory frustrating and annoying, of little value to users.   We are happy to have your information here, but please make sure that your group meeting  (or other resource) is secular and is generally aligned with the SRC philosophy of Sobriety, Secularity and Self-help.   If you are not sure what that means, you might want to have a look at our FAQ and Mission Statement on the main web site.   Make sure to enter your data carefully according to the instructions, and finally, please, return to update your record(s) promptly if your details should change in future.  We will send you a reminder every couple of months or so, if that’s OK with you.

PURPOSE  :  The overriding intent and purpose of this directory is simpleminded in the extreme;  to help people find a local secular support group meeting closest to them.  Failing  that, to contact suitable online support groups to immediately connect with.   Simple as that!     For our purposes, the particular brand or affiliation your group belongs to is unimportant so long as the orientation is secular.  However, the database is powerful enough to also allow for other types of listings that don’t get in the way. These categories would include treatment facilities, professionals who provide services to those with substance abuse problems,  and even to individual “private citizens” who wish to make contact for mutual support and fellowship. This is explained in more detail later.

A note about secular.  For the purpose of listings in this directory, and of SRC in general,  the term secular has  a specific and particular meaning:   "without regard to religion".    It doesn’t (necessarily) mean atheist or anti-religion.  An illustration might help.  A Muslim dentist has a Jewish patient, an atheist dental assistant, and a secretary who is a lapsed Catholic.  As long as all of that stays in the background while treating the patient's impacted wisdom tooth,  it meets our criteria of secular.  We are not knocking religious solutions and  other scenarios, only clarifying what we mean, and attempting to be clear about what type of listings are welcome here.  Additionally, according to our definition, AA and other 12 Step meetings that are atheist-agnostic-free thinker, or who consider themselves to be secular or “moderate”  (see below) are not only  warmly welcome but strongly  encouraged to add meetings here.  People need to find you, and right now you fly too low and often don't show up on the radar!

One important consideration in searching for records.  As of September 2006, our meeting directory is brand new and it is going to take awhile to populate it.  When we have enough records, you will be able to search in great specificity.  For example; online meetings hosted by the SOS organization in Albany, New York.  Unfortunately, at the present time, however,  such narrow searches are likely to prove frustrating.  Initially, you will get much better results searching  in very broad categories such as; all the meetings in California, or all the F2F (face-to-face live) meetings worldwide, or all of the meetings sponsored by the LSR organization, etc.  Begin with narrower searches if you like, but if you get no hits, broaden your search criteria.

What follows are explanation and instructions for adding data to the directory,  field-by-field..  You can also access this information "on the fly" as you are adding a record  by moving your mouse over the beige colored field names for a popup tip with info and instructions for filling in the field.  Note, if tip is obscured, simply scroll down until the tip is nearly at the top of the window and move your mouse over again. This will reveal the complete tip.

See separate note about Secular AA

A NOTE ABOUT SECULAR AA :  We warmly welcome and encourage listings for local meetings of AA Alcoholics Anonymous and other 12 Step Programs that describe themselves as secular, meaning atheist-agnostic-free thinker, secular humanist, etc., as well as those meetings which are in practice secular or "moderate" meaning that religious content is regarded as Suggested Only, and remains in the background.  If this applies to your meeting, please select Secular AA from the Affiliation dropdown list.

DISCLAIMER  :  Many of the “Secular AA” listings have been gratefully obtained from Agnostic AA NYC ==> http://www.agnosticaanyc.org/ who lovingly compiled the original list mostly from published meeting books and online listings based largely on the names of the groups.  Many or most (those dated September-October 2006) however, are unverified and have not given approval to be listed here, so  we don't really know what they are like. The publication of these records has not been endorsed by Alcoholics Anonymous World Services, Inc. or the General Service Office of Alcoholics Anonymous. We are most grateful to any of you  who can help to verify and provide additional or updated information about any of these meetings or to inform us about others secular  meetings that should be included here.

HELP US : Do you know of an atheist-agnostic-free thinker, secular or “moderate” 12 Step meeting not listed here?  Please

VENUE :

F2F means  face-to-face, a regular live meeting where people are physically in each other's presence

Online means any meetings or contact over the internet such as Yahoogroups, e-mail, chat, messaging, Skype, discussion forums, usenet, etc.

MEETING NAME :

This is the name of your meeting or local group. If your meeting has no name, make one up: Sunday Brunch, Tuesdays Downtown, Elm St. 2:00 p.m., Chat in the Park, Toms List, etc. Whatever you like

If this does not apply to you, leave blank.

CATEGORY  :  The overriding intent and purpose of this directory is to help people find local secular support group meetings closest to them.  However, the database is powerful enough to allow for other types of listings that don’t get in the way. The categories we allow are pretty straight forward:

Support Group Meetings (F2F and/or online) of any affiliation, and at the local level

Parent Organization such as Alcoholics Anonymous, LifeRing, SOS, etc. This would be a single listing representing the entire organization.

Treatment Facility Rehab centers, clinics, hospitals, outpatient facilities, etc.

Professionals are individuals or firms providing services related to recovery from addictions such as physicians, psychologists, social workers, attorneys, etc.

Individuals not representing any organization or affiliation are welcome to add a record here if they wish to be contacted by other individuals for fellowship and support. Be smart and exercise caution when exchanging personal information with people you do not know over the internet.

Others. Self-explanatory but meeting the criteria of secular and aligned with the SRC philosophy of secularity, sobriety and self-help.  See FAQ and Mission Statement for more information.

MEETING ADDRESS :  This is the street or postal address of your meeting.  Obviously, it does not apply to online meetings and some other situations.  We would like you to include an address, but you prefer not to, then type "Call or e-mail for location".

LOCATION or DIRECTIONS :  If applicable, tell the folks where to find you and how to get there: e.g., turn right on Elm, next door to the gallery. Left on Rt. 6, half mile past Water Road, etc.  Feel free to include a Google Map link to your address if you know how.

DATE & TIME :  If dates and times are uncertain or change frequently, please say so, and  type "Call or e-mail for dates & times".

MEETING DESCRIPTION : Please include a few words about the format, content and style of your meeting and any other info that might be interesting or helpful to a newbie.

CONTACT PERSON : Please include the name of a person whom visitors can contact for more info, details or for help in getting to a meeting. Also, telephone number and e-mail address. Ideally, this is the moderator or convenor of your local meeting

CONTACT E-MAIL  :  Please make it easy for newbies to connect with you and include a valid, working e-mail address. Thank you.

PLEASE HELP  :  Finally, please help us keep this directory useful and up to date.  If you have a record listed with us and your details change, please return and update your record.  You can do it yourself, or contact us if you need help.  If you have additional information, updates, corrections of any of the information here, please contact us.  If you have questions or suggestions please  We would love to hear from you.
